We recently published a list of 9 ways to quickly and easily shrink heat shrink tubing from Hilltop. Now we can add another solution that’s faster and simpler than all of them: cold shrink tubing.
As the name suggests, cold shrink tubing doesn’t require heat to do its thing. This means it can be applied by just about anybody; without the need for an open flame, gas gun or any other potentially dangerous tools of any kind.
Safety-wise, cold shrink tubing is the better option for the novice, but plenty of electricians are using it too. Why? Because it gets results!
Cold shrink tubing guarantees a secure, waterproof seal over cables, connections and electrical terminals. The method is simpler but the end result is largely the same.
So how does it work? How does this marvellous tubing shrink without high temperatures to send it on its way? The answer is simple: it’s always trying to shrink.
Cold shrink tubing is made from flexible EPDM rubber which is pre-stretched to its shipping diameter and assembled around a plastic core which keeps it there. As soon as this core is removed, the tubing shrinks to its much narrower natural size, creating an airtight seal in the process.
Using cold shrink on wires or terminal lugs couldn’t be simpler. All you have to do is place your desired length of EPDM tube over the connection or cable you’d like to place it on. Next, simply remove the plastic core to create a secure, permanent and perfectly waterproof seal.
The constant inward pressure of the tubing creates a compressive seal that doesn’t require adhesives or sealants. Your length of cable can even be flexed and bent but the seal will not break. In fact, it’s generally considered to be more flexible than heat shrink tubing.
